I know that I don't post this frequently. But, there is something that I really wanted to talk about, and I couldn't refrain myself from writing.
Last week, my college commenced. Out of the 7 engineering courses that I have, one of them is environmental studies. And, as of today, Environmental Studies is centred more or less around one single phenomenon, threatening our very existence on this planet, CLIMATE CHANGE.
We are not really going to talk about climate change itself, because I'm sure all of you are aware of what it is and how it is happening. Rather, we are going to discuss the magnified impact of our deeds on the planet.
So, during one of these lectures of mine, our professor recommended us to watch a webseries on NETFLIX... Oh no, I am not joking, he seriously did... He asked us to watch a show titled "OUR PLANET". Now, this show delves into the unknown aspects of our natural ecosystem, and a major part of it also discusses how we are harming the various species on the planet.
One such example is the plight of Walruses in Russia. As most of you are aware that global warming has led to an increase in the global temperature. This has further led to the glaciers and polar ice caps melting. Green land is one such example.

Millions of tonnes of ice lost in a matter of minutes. SCARY? I know.
Well, something similar is also taking place in the northern seas of Russia.
With the sea ice melting at an accelerating rate, the temporary resting places of walruses have shrunk remarkably. And this, has led to something extremely disturbing.
Thousands of walruses gather on rocky islands, in the middle of the ocean, and some end up climbing up to 50 metres, in search of a cool place to rest. This climb itself is a torture for this flippered beast. Now, Walrus's eyesight out of water is really poor, but it can still sense the presence of others down below. Once they get hungry, their desperation leads them to do something that is absolutely heartbreaking...
THEY JUMP!

This is nothing less than a suicide. But the question that now arises is, is this really a suicide?
Yes, it is a bloody murder! And if we are start enough to realise, the blood is on our hands. The very fact that a specie has to do something like this fills me with guilt and rage towards humans. No one gave us the right to torture other organisms in this world! However its not just one specie. The krills, the polar bear, the humpback whale, the corals and even the bees, are on a path towards extinction. All this has been, due to one and only one ego-centric group, THE HUMANS.
Nature needs to be preserved, even if it means that humans need to perish, it still has to be done! The sacrifice of more than 90% of the World's biodiversity because of the never-ending greed of just one specie, is in no way justifiable. Although, Sir David Attenborough, in the show, is humbly requesting us to care. I would like you all to rise, your hearts filled with rage and guilt. Start acting now!
But, we as citizens tend to take a passive approach. "We don't have the means and resources to tackle climate change", "how are we responsible? Its the industrialists who cause all this." These are the excuses that people make. If that is the case with you too, then just look up the carbon footprint of the flight you last took, the carbon footprint of your automobiles, the carbon footprint of the meat and dairy that you consume, and still if you aren't convinced that you need to act, look at the carbon footprint of the daily activities of a person, and then perhaps cease to exist (no offence!).
Coming to the question of "what can be done?" To know the answer to this click here.
Its already pretty late. Start acting NOW!
